WEST PECULIAR FIRE
PRESS RELEASE!

The West Peculiar Fire Protection District underwent a Public Protection Class Survey by ISO (Insurance Services Office) during the last part of December, 2004 and then evaluated again in March, 2006 to receive a “hauled water grading”.  We have received written confirmation of an ISO PPC Rating that will change from a split rating of 4/8B to 4/10.  The rating is based on a scale from 1 to 10. A rating of 1 is “exemplary” while a rating of 10 is “no recognized fire protection”.

The new rating provides a rating of “4” for all properties in the district who live within 5 road miles of the fire station, regardless of whether or not they have a fire hydrant.  This is based on our proven ability to provide hauled water at a certain rate in gallons per minute.

The new ratings will be effective after September, 2006.  Residents within the district should inquire about the new ratings when their homeowner’s or business policy renews after that date.

ISO is an organization that many insurance companies use to determine the cost of premiums as fire protection differs from one community to the next.  The “split” class means that those who live within 5 road miles of our fire station receive a rating of “4”, and those who do not live within the 5 road mile area receive a rating of “10”.   The rating is based on Water Supply 40%, Fire Department 50%, and Receipt of and Handling of Alarms 10%.

On average, a homeowner’s insurance rates on a $150,000 residence could decrease between $89 and $325 per year, while a business could save up to $350 per year per $1 million dollars of property value.  This equates to a savings district- wide of $506,000 per year as a conservative estimate.  This also equates to 46% of the West Peculiar annual operating budget.

This PPC Rating change was no small task and the West Peculiar Fire Protection District would like to thank the City of Peculiar and Public Water Supply Districts #2, #7, and #10 for the up-grading of the community’s water system.  Credit also goes to the Lee’s Summit Regional Communications Center (LSFD), who provides dispatch services for WPFPD for their cutting-edge services.  Finally, WPFPD would also like to recognize our staff, who’s hard work made this accomplishment possible.
